Artie Matthews (b. November 15, 1888, Braidwood, Illinois, USA – d. October 25, 1958) moved to St. Louis, Missouri in 1908, was heard by John Stark in 1918, who offered him $50 for original rags and also hired him as an arranger. moved to Cincinnati in 1916, and founded the Cosmopolitan School of Music, a music school for African Americans, with his wife in 1921. One of his students, Frank Foster, became the principal arranger for the Count Basie Orchestra.
