Tom Turpin (b. November 18, 1871, Savannah, Georgia – d. August 13, 1922), known as the “Father of Ragtime,” was the first African American to publish a rag, the “Harlem Rag.” He opened a saloon in St. Louis, Missouri which became an incubator for early folk ragtime. In addition to the saloon, he controlled a many other institutions, such as a theater, gambling houses, dance halls, and sporting houses. He was one of the first politically powerful African Americans in St. Louis.
