May Aufderheide (b. May 21, 1888, Indianapolis, Indiana – d. September 1, 1972, Pasadena, California), perhaps the most famous female composer of rags, known for her composition “Dusty Rag,” the first important rag to come out of the Indiana-Ohio region. Her father opened a the Aufderheide publishing house to market the sheet music of her rags to the buying public.
